"Laomden" is a Bai language, which means "the place where purple bamboo grows". Laomudeng Church is the largest church in the Nujiang Gorge. The blue brick walls, red-painted wooden windows, and tin roofs are simple and plain, showing the purity and piety of people's beliefs.
As early as 1902, French missionaries began to cross the Biluo Snow Mountain from the Cizhong area to the Nujiang area to preach, and established many churches. Old Mudden Church is one of the larger ones. From the outside, the church is not spectacular. There are no common stained glass windows, domes, and iconic Gothic spires, and there are even no musical instruments such as pipe organs. There are only benches and red-painted wooden windows. But this does not hinder people's piety. Every Sunday, believers from the surrounding villages gather here to worship.
