Pabangka is located in Nyangre Valley in the northern suburb of Lhasa, at the foot of Baosan Mountain. It is about 7 kilometers away from the center of Lhasa. The temple faces Sera Temple on the left, Qusang Rizhui in front, Geri Temple on the right, and Tashi Qulin Rizhui in the back.

The Tibetan language of Pabangka has the meanings of "giant stone palace" and "playing on the stone". Pabangka was originally one of the five ashrams built by Songtsan Gampo for his five concubines. Princess Wencheng once lived in Pabangka, and according to Feng Shui, it was determined that this place was the northern Xuangui position of Lhasa.
