Puji Temple was built by the decree of Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty. It is a temple on the southern platform of Wutai Mountain. Wisdom Manjusri is offered in Puji Temple.

Puji Temple was greatly damaged during the "Cultural Revolution". A large-scale temple became dilapidated within a few years, and many magnificent and elegant Buddhist temples left only the foundations and pillars. The existing buildings of Puji Temple include three Pilu halls, one Sanfo hall, the remnants of the Daxiong hall, and the pillar foundation of the Shanmen hall.

Because Puji Temple has been the only place for worshiping Buddha from the three northeastern provinces and Beijing and Tianjin from ancient times to Mount Wutai. It was called the South Gate of Mount Wutai in ancient times. In order to quickly and promptly resist enemy interference, the Eighth Route Army prepared and established the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Border Region Command in Puji Temple, and set up the headquarters treasury in this temple. Today, the ruins of the treasury still exist.
