Qugu Temple, built on the mountain, was originally called "Niebu Rizong". It was built by the yogi Nianqin (that is, the great achievement of Niebo), so it got its name. And because the temple is mainly dedicated to the stone statue of the self-shaped Infinite Life Buddha (Qugu), it is called "Qugu Temple".
Qugu Temple is located in Pulan County, Ngari District, to the north of the county seat and to the west of Mount Kailash. It is the first temple encountered on the way around the mountain.
Qugu Temple was destroyed during the "Cultural Revolution", and most of the cultural relics were lost. Rebuilt in 1985. There are many sacred sites around the temple: on the rock wall where the temple is located, there are traces of Naropa’s conch and copper pot flying to the sky, and there is Jidun spring nearby; there are convex rocks symbolizing the Maitreya Palace and the footprints of Tara under the temple Helangqin Baipu (elephant hermit cave) and "Topknot Zunsheng Pagoda".
