Hongya Canyon is located at the foot of Taiyue Mountain and belongs to the Taihang Mountain System. It is the highest peak of Taiyue Mountain, the commanding height of Jinzhong, Shanxi Province Fifth peak. The terrain is high in the east and low in the west, and there is a main ditch at the bottom of the red cliff. The climate is a typical temperate continental climate, with a strong monsoon influence, four distinct seasons, and a changeable climate, with long summers and winters, long springs and short autumns. The annual average temperature is 10.7°C, the lowest monthly average temperature is 3.7°C, and the highest monthly average temperature is 23.7°C. The vegetation in the Red Cliff Grand Canyon is well preserved, with a forest coverage rate of over 85% and a wide variety. There are 233 species of woody plants belonging to 99 genera in 44 families; and more than 500 species of vegetation in 62 families.
From the bottom of the cliff to the top, it can be divided into four vertical belts: the shrub and land reclamation belt below 1200 meters above sea level; the mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest belt at 1200-1800 meters above sea level, the main tree species are Chinese pine, spruce, aspen, white birch, Red birch, etc.; 1800-2200 meters above sea level is coniferous forest belt, mainly North China larch; above 2200 meters above sea level is mountain shrub meadow. From the valley floor, you can see lush and green forest resources, woody plants and herbaceous plants are countless. There are also countless precious Chinese medicinal materials such as "Ganoderma lucidum", "Wulingzhi", "Zhuqin", "Cangpu" and "Dangshen", which are known as the "treasure house of biological diversity".
There are more than 160 species of animals in Red Cliff Canyon, including 40 species of mammals and more than 120 species of birds, mainly including: leopard, musk deer, roe deer, black stork, wild goat, wild boar, blue sheep, fox, hare, pheasant, owl Wait. The overall environmental quality of the scenic spot is good, and the atmospheric environmental quality has reached the second-level standard of "Ambient Air Quality Standards" (3095-1996). The water quality in the scenic area is good, reaching the first-class standard of drinking water, without pollution, and has the reputation of "North China Green Lung" and "Natural Oxygen Bar".
