Sanmentang is an ancient and beautiful Dong village by the Qingshui River. It is surrounded by mountains and rivers. It is the gateway of the three rivers and nine streams, and the throat of the inner river and the outer port. It was the main timber trading port of the outer three rivers in history. The whole village is famous for its ancient architecture, stone culture, tree culture, water culture, and customs of the Dong nationality. It is a representative village of the Northern Dong culture. The concentration of cultural relics is rare in the whole country.

Sanmentang is an important material distribution center on the Qingshui River. A large amount of timber, medicinal materials, tung oil and other special products are transported from here to Changde, Hunan, and daily necessities such as ceramics, cotton yarn, and ironware are transported back there. It can be said that without Qingshuijiang, there would be no Sanmentang.

There are five ancient wharves in Sanmentang, namely Sanmenxi Wharf, Liujia Wharf, Wangjia Wharf, Wujia Wharf, and Xiejia Wharf. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties and before the 1950s, the wharf was crowded with wooden boats, and wooden rafts floated on the river, creating a spectacular scene.
