Shanjiang Miao Village was formerly known as "General Barracks", because when the Qing Dynasty suppressed the Miao people's uprising, troops were stationed here to set up a general barracks. The Miao village was short of water. After liberation, a Shanjiang reservoir was built on the mountain in the northwest of the village, so the Miao village was renamed "Shanjiang". In Miao language, this Miao village is called "Bagu", which means toad cave, because there is a cave beside the village, and there are many toads, so it is called so.
When entering the gate of the Miao village, drink wine at the gate first. The hospitable Miao girls stand in a row and require tourists to drink before entering the gate of the village. Then visit the Miao Nationality Museum, formerly known as Miao Wang Mansion - the residence of Miao Wang Long Yunfei. The museum houses Miao silver jewelry and costumes. There is the bedroom of Miao King Long Yunfei and a large bed with extremely exquisite wood carvings. Long Yunfei's life can be described as a legend. He fought against the Japanese and civil wars, loved the Miao people, and skinned human beings—only once, that man was a tailor who got his hands on King Miao's inner chamber. It is quite difficult to search for the specific location of "Shanjiang Miao Village" in the map on the Internet, but at the edge of "Shanjiang Town", you can see the three shocking words "Bopiting" at a glance.
After visiting the museum, come to the square in the Miao Village, watch the Miao people singing and dancing, thrilling performances of stepping on steel knives, and participate in interactive games such as jumping bamboo poles.
Walk around in the Miao Village and look at the watchtowers and city walls. Watchtowers, also known as Baojialou, are built with piled stones on the base and soil on the top. Generally, there are two floors above and below. There are narrow windows on all sides for watching and shooting. In the past, almost every household in the Shanzhai built watchtowers, and the larger one was built by Miao Wang Long Yunfei in the 1930s. The city wall is built around the village along the mountain, and there are also observation and shooting holes on the wall. A beacon tower was built on the top of the village in imitation of the Great Wall, and watchtowers were added above the gate of the village. The watchtowers and city walls are designed to resist wild animals and foreign enemies. Once the intruders break through the city walls and enter the village, the watchtowers of each household can fight against the intruders separately. But now, the city walls and watchtowers have long been in ruins. On the contrary, the Miao girls still wear bright and eye-catching Miao clothes, and even the old women farming behind the house wear authentic Miao clothes, which are in stark contrast with the bluestone and earthen walls, as if the past history of Miao villages, sadness and splendor go hand in hand.
There is a market in Shanjiang on the third and eighth day of the lunar new year, and the market is also a time for Miao girls to go out in costumes to find a lover. The scale of the market is really not comparable to that of the city's shopping malls, but it does have the characteristics of natural, green and handmade.
