The Shennong Altar was built to commemorate the Yandi Shennong, the ancestor of the descendants of the Yellow Emperor. As the southern gate of Shennongjia, it is also the first stop for most tourists to visit Shennongjia. The altar square is magnificent. The main building is a 21-meter-high, 35-meter-wide statue of Shennong’s giant bull head. Emperor Yan of Shennong stands among the green mountains, driven by the earth, with his eyes slightly closed, as if thinking about the mysteries of the universe. The scenic area is divided into five parts: the main sacrificial area, the ancient botanical garden, the thousand-year-old cedar, the butterfly specimen hall, and the chime hall. The ground in the sacrificial area is a circular and square pattern representing heaven and earth. The five-color stone also represents gold, wood, water, fire and earth in the theory of the five elements. The whole scenic spot is surrounded by green hills and has beautiful scenery.

There will be a bonfire party at the Shennong Altar in the evening. Local people will perform programs such as ancestor hunting, marriage, and double flower stick dance. Local young men and women will also sing love songs and express their love with shoes. Every year, many compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and overseas Chinese come here to find their roots and pay homage to Emperor Shennong.
