Shiping County is located in the south of Yunnan Province and the northwest of Honghe Prefecture. The ancient city of Shiping was built in the Ming Dynasty with four gates. It is named Yingen in the east, Tonggong in the west, Gongchen in the north and Zhongxiu in the south. 400 years ago, the brick city with a circumference of 748 feet, a height of two feet, and a thickness of two feet is now only the south gate which was renamed "Yuntai".
Shiping, emphasizing education and prospering literature, was a "famous state for literature" in the Ming and Qing dynasties. There were 65 scholars in the literature, 15 in the Hanlin, 1 in the economic special yuan, 11 in the martial arts, and more than 600 civil and military candidates. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were 10 academies, hundreds of private schools and free schools; Taishi Hall, Jinshi Hall, General Hall, Observation Hall, Zongren Mansion and private gardens were full of beautiful things in eyes. Relevant experts called Shiping Ancient City a museum of residential buildings in Ming and Qing Dynasties . Strolling in the streets and alleys of Shiping Ancient City, you can see ancient buildings and ancient dwellings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties everywhere.
