The South Grotto Temple and the North Grotto Temple in Qingyang, Gansu Province were excavated in the same period, and both were built by the governor of Jingzhou in the Northern Wei Dynasty. They are known as "the double pearls of the North and South Grottoes". There are 5 existing stone niches in the South Grotto Temple, and only caves 1 and 4 have statues.

Cave No. 1 is the main cave, and there are square niches on the wall rocks on both sides of the cave door. The cave is 13 meters high, 17 meters long and 24 meters wide, in a rectangular shape. The top of the cave is in the shape of a double bucket, with a unique structure and a magnificent shape. There are bright windows on the door. At the entrance to the grotto, there are seven Buddha statues 6 meters high standing around the three walls facing you. This arrangement of seven Buddhas in one hall has never been seen in any large grottoes in China. The heads and hands of the Seven Buddhas are larger than normal, and the body is relatively fat and short, simple and strong, showing the spirit of the northern nationality. The Buddha statue has a high nose and big ears, a plump face, a kind expression, a simple and honest shape, a solemn expression, condescending, overlooking all living beings. Among the seven Buddhas, there are thirteen statues of Bodhisattvas who are intimidating and serving, with beautiful appearance and graceful appearance. There are also missionary stories carved on the top of the cave, depicting the plot of Sakyamuni from birth to becoming a monk. The shape is vivid and full of life interest. It is an art treasure.

Cave No. 4 was excavated in the Tang Dynasty. The cave is 5 square meters and square in shape. There are clay statues in the center for Manjushri, Samantabhadra and Guanyin Bodhisattva. The South Grottoes represent a unique art form of Chinese Buddhist grottoes.
