Tainan Confucius Temple was built in 1665. Over the past 300 years, the Confucian Temple has undergone several major renovations. It is the most spectacular Confucian Temple in Taiwan and has been listed as a first-class historic site. Except for tourists, most of the people who come here are students, praying for their success in their studies.
The entire Tainan Confucian Temple still maintains the traditional layout of "Left Learning and Right Temple". The main building in the Confucian Temple is the Dacheng Hall in the center. What is amazing is that there are no pillars or corridors in the hall, and it is only supported by beams outside the thick walls. It has a special structure and can be called a typical representative of ancient Chinese architecture.
The Confucian Temple is dedicated to the God of Confucius, while the East and West Wings are dedicated to other ancient saints and sages. The ceremony of worshiping Confucius is held in the Confucian Temple Square every year. Every year on September 28th in the Gregorian calendar, on the day of the ceremony, the Mayor of Tainan presides over the ceremony, following ancient rituals. The atmosphere is solemn and the ceremony is grand.
There is also an authentic plaque on the display of the Confucian Temple "the first school in Taiwan". It is not known who wrote it without the signature. Under the plaque is a statue of Chen Yonghua consulting to join the army. It was this man who persuaded Zheng Chenggong's son, Zheng Jing, to "establish a holy temple and build a school", and has been praised by later generations as "the advocate of Taiwan education". This Confucian Temple is also the first institution of higher learning built by Zheng Chenggong after regaining Taiwan. In the early Qing Dynasty, it was the place where all Taiwan's children went to school, so it was called "the first school in Taiwan".
