Tanggula Pass is about 5231 meters above sea level. "Tanggula", the Tibetan word for "mountain on a high mountain", is known as "wind and snow warehouse" because of the constant wind and snow all year round.

Tanggula Mountain is the watershed between the Yangtze River and the Nu River, also known as Dangla Mountain and Dangkong Mountain. The mountain is more than 150 kilometers wide and its altitude is mostly 5000-6000 meters. Its main peak, Gela Dandong, is more than 6000 meters above sea level.
