Tayuan Temple is located on the south side of Xiantong Temple, Taihuai Town, Wutai Mountain. It was originally the pagoda courtyard of Xiantong Temple. After the Ming Dynasty rebuilt the stupa (Dabai Pagoda), it became a separate temple. Because there is a Dabai Pagoda in the temple, it is called Tayuan. temple.

The big white pagoda in the temple, the full name is "Sakyamuni Relic Pagoda", which is the main symbol of the temple and the landmark building of Mount Wutai. It is particularly spectacular against the backdrop of red walls and glazed tile roofs. According to research, today's Dabai Pagoda was built in the sixth year of Dade in the Yuan Dynasty (1302), and was designed and built by a Nepalese craftsman, Aquan Nigo. It is said that there is a "Cishou Pagoda" wrapped in the Dabai Pagoda. The exact date of construction of the Cishou Pagoda cannot be determined at present, and the relics of the Buddha Sakyamuni are also hidden in the pagoda.

The whole temple of Tayuan Temple is centered on the Dabai Pagoda. On the central axis, there are screen walls, archways, mountain gates, Daciting Shoubao Hall, Tadian Sutra Pavilion, Shanhai Tower, Manjusri Fa Pagoda and other buildings. In front of the gate of Tayuan Temple, there is a wooden archway with three gates. This wooden archway is huge and majestic. All the wooden components in the archway have been carved and decorated with exquisite workmanship. They are precious woodcarving works left over from the Ming Dynasty.
