Tongmai Bridge is the throat project of National Highway 318 of Sichuan-Tibet Highway, and it is a temporary maintenance project. The bridge is designed as a suspension bridge with twin towers and double spans, spanning Yigong Zangbo, a tributary of Palong Zangbo, with a total length of 258 meters, a main span of 210 meters and a height of 31.5 meters.
It turns out that there is a permanent reinforced concrete bridge here. On April 9, 2000, a huge landslide occurred in Yigong, Tibet. Especially after the dam break of Yigong Lake, the Tongmai Bridge and some nearby roads were washed away. The traffic on the southern Sichuan-Tibet line was completely interrupted, and more than 90 townships in the three counties of Medog, Bomi, and Nyingchi became isolated islands. Tongmai Bridge is a traffic protection project. The completion of the bridge has made the interrupted 318 National Highway unimpeded. Tongmai Bridge only allows one vehicle to cross the bridge at a time. When vehicles cross the bridge, you can clearly feel the trembling of the chain bridge.
