The Turpan Desert Botanical Garden is affiliated to the Xinjiang Institute of Biological Soil and Desert Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. One of the 12 botanical gardens directly under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, it is the only desert botanical garden in the arid desert region of Northwest China and the lowest botanical garden in the world. It is located about 10 kilometers southeast of Turpan City, with an altitude of -95-76 meters. The park site is located in the wind-eroded quicksand area of about 6,000 hectares between the three townships of Chatikale, Aiding Lake and Yaer Township in the hinterland of the Turpan Basin. This is the second lowest land in the world, known as "wind bank" and "fire island". The annual average number of days with strong winds above level 8 is 26.8 days. Up to 68 days, the maximum wind speed exceeds 40 m/s. The flow speed of wind and sand ranks first in the country; the annual average accumulated temperature is 13.9 degrees. The extreme maximum temperature is 47.62 degrees, the extreme minimum temperature is -28 degrees, the summer sand surface temperature exceeds 80 degrees, the annual average precipitation is 16.4 mm, the annual evaporation is 2837.8 mm; the annual average humidity is 41%; the annual sunshine hours are 3049.5 hours, and the sunshine percentage is 68%; the total annual radiation dose is 139.5 kcal/cm2.
