Wudangzhao is hidden in the depths of the rolling Daqing Mountains in Baotou City. It is a white building built on layers of mountains, surrounded by mountains, and shaded by pines and cypresses. It is majestic and magnificent. Founded in the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, Wudangzhao is the largest Tibetan Buddhist Gelugpa monastery in Inner Mongolia. Together with the Potala Palace in Tibet, Kumbum Monastery in Qinghai and Labrang Monastery in Gansu, it is known as the four famous temples of Chinese Lamaism.
Wudangzhao is a typical style of Tibetan Buddhist temples. There is no unified central axis, and all the main halls are scattered irregularly in the valley. There are no walls and courtyards, and each building is self-contained. On the top of the main halls, there are wind-polished copper antelopes lying opposite the Dharma wheel and the temple emblem. The golden light is shining, and the surrounding mountains with pines and cypresses and prayer flags are dancing, which is particularly spectacular. The main building of Wudangzhao is composed of eight sutra halls (six existing), three living Buddha mansions and a mourning hall where the relic towers of living Buddhas of this call are placed. Visitors can walk around the main buildings in the scenic area.
Suguqin Dugong (Hall) is a larger building in Wudangzhao, located in the front of the temple, with three stories high. The front hall on the first floor is the scripture hall, where there are 80 square columns with various patterns carved and painted on them. The four walls of the scripture hall are filled with stories about the biography of Sakyamuni Buddha and various statues of Dharma protectors. The bird's eye view mural of "Nine Great Buddhist Temple Buildings" painted in the corridor on the second floor is very precious, and you must not miss it. Every morning, lamas from all halls come to this hall to recite the morning scriptures - Manjia Sutra.
The earliest temple built in Wudangzhao is Dongkuoer Hall, which is located high in the whole temple. Other buildings are centered here. Emperor Qianlong gave it the name "Guangjue Temple" in 1756. A plaque carved in four Tibetan languages is hung on the lintel in the middle of the gate of the temple. This is the Kalachakra School of Buddhism, teaching astronomy, calendar, mathematics, divination, and calculating the date of the Tibetan calendar. The square in front of the hall is a place for lectures and debates, that is, an examination room for academic upgrading.
On the second floor of the Jinke (Mandala) Hall is the cultural relics museum, which exhibits some precious cultural relics preserved by Wudangzhao. You can see thangkas, Jingdezhen porcelain in the Qing Dynasty, daily necessities of living Buddhas, ritual utensils, and the only two gilded mandala altars in Inner Mongolia. The rest of the halls also have their own characteristics. Some halls have a ten-meter-high bronze statue of Sakyamuni; There are hideous statues of Dharma protectors, or statues of White Tara and Green Tara.
The temple fair here is held every year from the 25th day of the seventh lunar month to the first day of August. All the lamas in the temple recite the "Mani Sutra" in the Suguqin Hall; Walk to the temple. There are various activities in the temple fair, and ghost dancing is one of the main activities. If you are interested, don't miss it.
