Founded in 1394, Xiaqiong Temple is one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist temples in Qinghai and the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism Gelug. The terrain of the temple is unusual and elegant, and the cliff behind the temple is shaped like a vulture bird spreading its wings, so it is named "Xiaqiong Temple".

Since its establishment, Xiaqiong Temple has successively built Miaoyin Bodhisattva Hall, Maitreya Hall, Jinding Hall, Atisha Hall, King Kong Buddha Hall, Zhizha Buddha Hall, Sangsang Hall, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Hall, Jianhe Maitreya Hall, Shan The Buddha Hall constitutes an ancient architectural complex combining Han and Tibetan art styles. The overall building is solemn and generous, majestic and magnificent, with a well-organized layout and magnificent momentum.

In 1788, Emperor Qianlong bestowed the name "Fajing Temple" and ordered a plaque in four languages: Han, Tibetan, Mongolian, and Manchu, with the inscription "Mahayana Prosperous Land" in gold.
