Yaowang Mountain Cliff Carvings

Yaowang Mountain is located on the southwest side of the Potala Palace. The cliff on the back of the mountain is covered with more than 5,000 large and small Buddha statues.

The group of stone carvings on the cliffs of Yaowang Mountain, with Vajra Buddha as the main offering, spreads around. There are nearly 5,000 large and small Buddha statues chiseled on the cliff, which is 30 meters wide and nearly 15 meters high. The entire red rock wall is engraved with large and small Buddha statues, which is very spectacular. Among the citizens, if someone from a poor family passed away, if they couldn’t afford the Thangka of Dushi, they could buy a little paint and go to Yaowang Mountain to renew the Buddha statues carved on the cliff, so that it could be compared with the thangka of Dushi. Buddha statues have the same merit. This custom is still going on today.

Standing at the foot of Yaowang Mountain and watching so many exquisite stone Buddha statues, you will be intoxicated by the long cultural history of Tibetans. Here is the crystallization of human wisdom and rich Buddhist thoughts in different periods of time. Through these stone carvings, we realize that different nations use the same method-carving stones to record and create their own civilization.
