Yongning Gate is the south gate of Xi'an City Wall, often called the South Gate, built in the early years of the Sui Dynasty. It is the oldest city gate in Xi'an and has been in use for a long time. In the Sui Dynasty, it was the eastern one of the three city gates in the south of the imperial city, and it was called Anshang Gate. At the end of Tang Dynasty, when Han Jian built a new city, it was reserved as the south gate, and it was changed to Yongning Gate in Ming Dynasty. The South Gate is the welcoming gate of Xi'an City. Because it is the most complete and beautifully restored gate among the gates of Xi'an City Wall, it has become the gate most tourists choose to visit the city.

Chinese folks believe that the south is where the god of fire is located, and the south gate is named Yongning Gate to pray to the god of fire, so that there will be no fire and peace forever. Yongningmen has point Jiangtai, gate tower, moon city, urn city, city tower and so on. Its archery tower was destroyed in the defense of Xi'an in 1926. Now it has been rebuilt, and the texture of the facade remains the same as that of the original watchtower, and a museum with historical sites and city wall culture exhibitions has also been added inside. There is South Gate Square outside the gate, South Street is inside the gate, and Nanguan Main Street is outside the gate. At the same time, this gate is also close to Shuyuanmen Cultural Street and Beilin Museum.
