Founded in 1922, Yunnan University was known as the private Donglu University, and changed to South University in 1938. It is one of the earliest established universities in western China. The school is located in Wuhua District, Kunming City, adjacent to Cuihu Park, with beautiful scenery and quiet environment. It is a good place for tourists to stroll leisurely and feel the academic atmosphere.
After entering the campus from the south gate, there are 95 steps. After climbing the 95 steps, you will come to Huize Yuan. With high red brick walls and white Roman columns, this European-style building was built in 1923. It was designed by a returnee at that time, adding a touch of European style to the beautiful campus of Yunda.
Behind Huize Courtyard is Zhigong Hall, which is different from Huize Courtyard. This is a typical Chinese-style building with bright red pillars, carved beams and painted buildings. It is currently the auditorium of Yunda University. There is a row of relatively low houses on the east side, which was the examination room in the imperial examination era, called "Gongyuan". The Yingqiu Building near the Gongyuan was originally a dormitory for girls. It was designed and built by Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin. To the west of Yingqiu Tower, there is an inconspicuous stone pier near the bell tower. This is the place where the latitude and longitude of Kunming was calculated earlier in the country.
Yunda has a beautiful scenery, satisfying it, and feeling leisurely and comfortable. What you can’t miss is Ginkgo Avenue, which is located north of Tianwen Point, from Wenyuan Building to Huize Courtyard. Each ginkgo tree is luxuriant. Every November, the ginkgo leaves turn yellow, and the whole road is golden, which is quite spectacular.
