Zhang Yuan was first built in 1915 and completed in 1916. It is a private residence built by Zhang Biao, the governor of the two lakes in the Qing Dynasty. It is well-known because of two influential figures in the modern history of China, one is Mr. Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of the revolution, and the other is the last emperor Puyi. Only 54 days apart, the two key figures of the 1911 Revolution just passed by. Zhang Yuan witnessed the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic; the Japanese invasion of China and the military and civilian resistance against Japan; the liberation of Tianjin; and the changes in modern Chinese history.
