Danghe Reservoir is located at Danghekou in Dunhuang City, 36 kilometers north of Dunhuang City. The reservoir has two hydrological stations, Danghekou and Dangchengwan. It is the only flood reporting station in the upper reaches of the reservoir; there are also two entrusted rainfall observation stations, Aksai and Wukuomiao. At 58 kilometers upstream of the dam site, neither of the two stations has any task of reporting floods.
The source of water in the Danghe Reservoir is mainly the snowmelt water on icebergs and snow, and the collection of rainwater in the area where the river flows. It used to be a seasonal river, but now the river channel is artificially intercepted to build a reservoir, and the water flow is stored and used for urban drinking water and agricultural irrigation. Although the snow-capped mountains are hundreds of kilometers away from the Danghe Reservoir and the weather in the desert is relatively hot, the river water is still cold in summer. It is very suitable for taking pictures in the water.
