The ancient city of Huiyuan is located in Huocheng County, Ili, Xinjiang. In history, Ili was an important passage from Xinjiang to Central Asia. In order to strengthen the governance of the Yili area in the Qing Dynasty, Qianlong set up Yili generals here, built Huiyuan City, and successively built around it. Eight satellite cities were built, collectively referred to as "Nine Cities of Ili". Huiyuan City, known as the head of the "Nine Cities of Ili", is better preserved now, and the former site of the General's Mansion is still preserved in the city.
The main buildings of the General’s Mansion are quadrangle-style, civil-structure cornice-style “people” beam bungalows, with simple and elegant eaves and no painted beams or carvings. At the entrance are two stone lions lying prone and looking majestically. The delicate shape of the southern stone lions is integrated with the rough carving skills of Xinjiang. The ancient trees in the courtyard are towering, and the four ancient trees are living witnesses of history. Standing in the vestibule and looking forward, it seems that there are messengers galloping to report the news of the battle.
In the center of Huiyuan ancient city stands the majestic and tall Bell and Drum Tower. When you ascend the tower, you can have a panoramic view of the scenery inside and outside the city. Lin Zexu once led the people to open water conservancy here, and was respected by General Yili and people of all ethnic groups.
