Its metropolitan area is the most populous metropolitan area within a 560-mile (900 km) radius and the second most populous city in the Mountain West after Phoenix, Arizona. In 2016, it was named the best place to live in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.

Zhangjiakou City, also known as "Zhangyuan" and "Wucheng", is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province, located in the northwest of Hebei Province, at the junction of Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia provinces and cities, and is the intersection of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (around the Bohai Sea) economic circle and the Ji-Jin-Meng (Outer Great Wall) economic circle.
