Phoenix is the anchor of the Phoenix metropolitan area, also known as the Valley of the Sun, which in turn is part of the Salt River Valley. Shanghai Pudong International Airport was completed in 1999. On September 16, 1999, the first phase of the project was completed and opened to navigation.
