Los Angeles (US: /lɔːs ˈændʒələs/ (listen) lawss AN-jəl-əs;[a] Spanish: Los Ángeles [los ˈaŋxeles], lit. 'The Angels'), often referred to by its initials L.A., is the largest city in the state of California and the second most populous city in the United States after New York City, as well as one of the world's most populous megacities. Qianzu invented planting mulberry to raise silkworms, drawing silk to weave silk, and was respected as the first silkworm and silkworm god in previous dynasties, so Yanting was also known as the "Chinese mother."
