• Mesa
  • Lahu-Va-Blang-Dai Autonomous County of Shuangjiang

A mesa is an isolated, flat-topped elevation, ridge or hill, which is bounded from all sides by steep escarpments and stands distinctly above a surrounding plain. Mesas characteristically consist of flat-lying soft sedimentary rocks capped by a more resistant layer or layers of harder rock, e.g. shales overlain by sandstones. The resistant layer acts as a caprock that forms the flat summit of a mesa. The caprock can consist of either sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and limestone; dissected lava flows; or a deeply eroded duricrust. Unlike plateau, whose usage does not imply horizontal layers of bedrock, e.g. Tibetan Plateau, the term mesa applies exclusively to the landforms built of flat-lying strata. Instead, flat-topped plateaus are specifically known as tablelands.

Shuangjiang gets its name from the intersection of Lancang River and Xiaohei River in the southeast of the county, which belongs to Lincang City, Yunnan Province. The county covers an area of 2165.03 square kilometers, and has jurisdiction over 4 townships, 2 towns, 72 villages, 3 communities, Mengku overseas Chinese Management District and Shuangjiang Farm Management Committee. As of 2013, the total population is 170000. In 2012, Shuangjiang County completed an annual GDP of 2.3 billion yuan. Shuangjiang is the hometown of multi-ethnic cultures in China, and it is the only multi-ethnic autonomous county in China composed of Lahu, WA, Bulang and Dai nationalities. Shuangjiang is the native place of Mengku Daye tea in China. Mengku Daye tea, which originated in Shuangjiang, was twice evaluated as an improved variety of Chinese traditional tea by the National Tea Variety Committee in the 1960s and 1980s. Shuangjiang is the green pearl on the Tropic of Cancer, which runs through Shuangjiang County.
