• Mesa
  • Pingxiang

A mesa is an isolated, flat-topped elevation, ridge or hill, which is bounded from all sides by steep escarpments and stands distinctly above a surrounding plain. Mesas characteristically consist of flat-lying soft sedimentary rocks capped by a more resistant layer or layers of harder rock, e.g. shales overlain by sandstones. The resistant layer acts as a caprock that forms the flat summit of a mesa. The caprock can consist of either sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and limestone; dissected lava flows; or a deeply eroded duricrust. Unlike plateau, whose usage does not imply horizontal layers of bedrock, e.g. Tibetan Plateau, the term mesa applies exclusively to the landforms built of flat-lying strata. Instead, flat-topped plateaus are specifically known as tablelands.

Pingxiang, a city under the jurisdiction of Jiangxi Province (prefectural level), an important member of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, is located in the west of Jiangxi Province, bordering Yichun City in the east, Ji'an City in the south, Zhuzhou City in Hunan Province in the west and Liuyang City in Hunan Province in the north. The landform is more complex and belongs to the subtropical humid monsoon climate zone with four distinct seasons; it has jurisdiction over 3 counties and 2 districts with a total area of 3823.99 square kilometers and has a resident population of 1.9332 million at the end of 2018. In 2018, Pingxiang achieved a regional gross domestic product (GDP) of 100.905 billion yuan, an increase of 8.7% over the previous year. Pingxiang is the "west gate" of Jiangxi, which is in the central position in the economic development pattern of western Jiangxi. It is known as "the thoroughfare of Hunan and Jiangxi" and "the throat of Wu and Chu". Pingxiang is located in the radiation core area of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan economic circle and accepts the Pan-Pearl River Delta.
